Aaron Nonis · Emmy-winning interactive entertainment executive · AI-native builder Phoenix, AZ

I build small teams around ambitious ideas and grow them into organizations that ship firsts.

Twenty-five years across Microsoft, HBO, and venture-backed studios. The record below is a ledger, not a pitch: every entry ends in something that shipped.

SHIPS FIRSTS · SEA · LA · PHX · EST. 2000

The Ledger

Selected launches, oldest first. Dates are ship dates.

My first launch: consumer 3D creation software on store shelves, shipped as a contract engineer on Sierra Home's landscaping suite while I was still a full-time engineering student. The ledger opens here, and a software historian has since written its retrospective.

2003

Windows Small Business Server 2003

shipped Oct 9, 2003

My first Microsoft ship: primary developer of the administrative tool suite for the small-business server line. The remote-client desktop architecture I built there became my first patent.

2006

XNA Game Studio 1.0

shipped Dec 11, 2006

Third member of the founding team; development lead for the toolchain that democratized Xbox development. Personally designed and built XNA Game Studio Connect, the certified, encrypted bridge that let consumer code run safely on a closed console. Zero piracy incidents. The Connect work produced two patents: safely executing unsigned code on a closed system, and the encrypted channel that carried it there.

2007

XNA Game Studio 2.0

shipped Dec 13, 2007

Xbox Live networking arrived and the toolchain opened to the full Visual Studio family; the creator community scaled through thousands of independent developers.

2008

XNA Game Studio 3.0

shipped Oct 30, 2008

Write once, ship to three screens: Windows, Xbox 360, and Zune. Across the platform's run, 4,000+ independent developers shipped more than 3,000 certified Xbox 360 titles on tools my team built.

2012·2018

HBO GO + HBO Now, every screen

3 → 200+ devices

Arrived as a new organization's first engineer and built it to 500 people, hiring 300 engineers and writing the career architecture myself. From the PlayStation 3 beachhead until 2018, every HBO GO and HBO Now client app on every screen shipped under me: iOS and Android rebuilt from the ground up, Roku, Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Chromecast, smart TVs across every major maker, and Amazon Fire TV in eight weeks to enable a major distribution partnership. Three devices became more than 200, at 100+ releases a month. The client's screen-navigation architecture became a patent of its own, granted in 2019.

2015

HBO Now

shipped Apr 7, 2015

HBO's first direct-to-consumer product, launched on our client stack days before the Game of Thrones premiere. Webby Award, Best Streaming Video App, 2016 and 2017.

2015·2016

The backend, brought home

$10M a month, ended

I proposed the strangler-pattern migration off the vendor backend, hired the services engineers who executed it, and held the division together through the public defeat that made the plan necessary. The delivery belonged to the services organization; the strategy, the staffing, and the will were mine. Endpoint by endpoint the platform came home, ending more than $10M a month in vendor costs, and the division's data-center-to-cloud migration cut server costs another 80 percent.

2016·2017

Westworld: the VR experience

Emmy, 2017

A marketing activation that became Emmy-winning content, built with the series' creators as a 12-person, $4M production. The win chartered HBO's interactive division, which I founded and ran: a cross-functional incubation studio spanning narrative, art, design, engineering, and production.

2017·2018

Mosaic

app + series, in parallel

Steven Soderbergh's interactive series companion. I executive produced the app and shipped it alongside the HBO series, holding a first-of-its-kind production to schedule across a novel authoring platform.

2019

Westworld Awakening

Steam + Quest

A $4M interactive title shipped to consumer storefronts. Quality was forced through vertical-slice gates and a motion-capture investment; the result was praised by VR players and press.

2021·2024

Shrapnel

$50M+ digital goods

COO and Platform Director of a venture-backed AAA studio: 7 founders to 250 people, $30M raised, a creator marketplace economy operated across 200+ investors with zero security incidents, and Game of the Year recognition two years running. I designed the revenue architecture that carried the company through its hardest period without missing a payroll.

2025

An agentic game master

live in 48 hours

Co-founded a pre-seed AI storytelling venture and shipped its proof: an agentic game master serving a live 1,500-member community two days after first commit. Presented at DICE; four investor conversations followed. The venture ended at prototype stage. The capability didn't.

Now

Building with the current wave. Hands on, weekly.

A live-generation game loop

under 1¢ per session

An AI-native prototype whose content is generated at play time, engineered to sub-cent inference cost per session with a prompt-caching architecture. Solo build.

A governed multi-model pipeline

1M+ words under canon control

A production writers' room run across four AI platforms plus generative audio, with quality gates rigorous enough to catch professional-grade model drift. Case study publishing soon.

Fractional transformation practice

since Sept 2025

Operator-grade AI adoption for real organizations: technology modernization for a national consumer-trust nonprofit through a CEO-led restructuring, and agent-assisted program management that measurably lifted delivery across a consultancy's client work.

About

The through-line of my career is a room: smart people in positive conflict, making something better than any one of them could have made alone. My job is to build that room, keep it cohesive, and grow the people in it until they outgrow me. My hires lead studios today; my successors were my trainees.

The craft underneath is consistent: take a capability that works for insiders and turn it into a platform outsiders can build on, then run it with an operator's discipline: budgets, gates, launches, and the occasional impossible deadline met in eight weeks.

Built in Seattle, based in Phoenix, family in Los Angeles.
